There are 4 types of fittings used by Stair Safety Gate manufacturers:

Pressure Fit Gates – True pressure-fit baby safety gates require no fixings and rely on pressure generated by the gate. Pressure fit gates can be moved easily from one location to another and they will have a trip bar at the base. The Babydan Pressure Indicator Safety Gate available at BabySecurity has colour coded indicators that display when optimum pressure is achieved, at that point they are claimed to handle just about the most determined two year old. Pressure Fit stair gates are generally not suitable for use at the top of the stairs.

Pressure Fit into Screw Cups – This type of stair gate is pressure fitted but they must be used with ‘screw cups’. This type is typically made by Lindam and other manufacturers.

Screw Fit Stair Safety Gates – This type of baby safety gate requires fixing to a solid surface and cannot normally be extended, relying on flexi-fit. However they do not have trip plates at the base of the gate.

Baby Playpen and Configure gates – These safety gates are useful for dividing a room or forming a secure play area for babies and toddlers. Babydan Playpen and Configure Safety Gates can be wall mounted for additional strength and security and add on extensions can make them more flexible.

Safety gates are often described in other various ways such as:

Narrow Baby Gates – suitable for narrower than standard doorways

Wide Safety Gates – suitable for wider staircases and double opening doors

Tall Stair Gates – additional safety for older children

Pet gates – while child gates may be suitable for use with pets this does not necessarily work the other way around.

Self Close or Auto close Gates – Internal mechanisms ensure gate closes after use

Swing shut Safety Gates – These gates swing shut but will need to be locked manually

Travel Safety Gates – Easily portable to take on holiday or overnight visits
