Humidifiers Or Dehumidifiers?

Which should you buy for your child's nursery, a humidifier, or a dehumidifier?

And what's the real difference? This can be a confusing area for many people, but it's important to make the right decision. Put simply a humidifier helps to add moisture to the air, where it would otherwise be too dry, and a dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the air. So why would you need to do either?

Humidifiers, which add moisture to the air, help with the physical discomfort that comes from dry skin, especially around the nose, lips or throat, and also helps with conditions such as sinus headaches and asthma, and skin eczema sufferer. If your child has a cold, a humidifier can help to thin the mucus which would otherwise block your child's nose, easing congestion and soothing coughs.

A dehumidifier on the hand is an essential tool in helping to combat the problems associated with dust mites, mould and mildew. Even in relatively small quantities these can all cause severe allergic reactions, and can even result in children developing lifelong conditions such as asthma.

In most cases a humidifier will only be used in fairly short bursts, and only when needed. A dehumidifier is likely to be used slightly more often.

Another thing to consider is what type of humidifier you will use, as there are two basic types. Humidifiers can either add moisture to the air using a cool mist feature, or they can heat up water so that it evaporates into the air. But which is best?

The cool mist feature is usually very much quieter in operation, but the evaporation technique kills bacteria and harmful microorganisms in the process, so whilst noisier, it has added health benefits.

Rather than suggesting which is best it's important to be aware of the differences and benefits, and compare products so that you can make your own mind up based on your individual needs.

Finally, please note that other conditions in the room apart from the level of humidity are important. Keep an eye room temperature to make sure your child’s safe and comfy at all times.
